Continued from Charleston Day 3 Part 1.
Now, there are two decisions to be made. First, should we go back to the hotel for PL to nap in her crib, or should we risk it and keep pushing her around in her stroller and hope that she’ll fall asleep in it. Seeing that she fell asleep yesterday, we decided to keep going and not head back to the hotel.
The other decision at hand is whether we’ll take the bus down to the other end of the historic district of Charleston, or whether we’ll take the really long hike down there. This was a little bit more difficult since we had such an unpleasant bus experience just earlier…Hmm
I guess this made our decision for us. There was already a bus waiting around right when we exited the aquarium. It’s also super sunny, so a bus would do well for us not getting sunburned walking under the noon sun.
I am cute and I am chill, and I’ll happily smile back if you smile at me.
Here we connect to another bus. Again, lucked out as this bus was already waiting for us.
Doh, the mean bus lady made us fold up our stroller saying that it was a hazard since it could roll away.
It’s been extremely exhausting and difficult traveling with PL. But photos like this make me feel like it’s all been worth it. I will forget about how difficult it was in the moment, and instead remember how she had so much fun climbing up and down….stairs.
Also, I forgot to mention that for the past two days, PL has been having the worst allergies, ever. In fact, all of Charleston is currently covered in a thick coat of yellow pollen. PL must have sneezed 100 times yesterday and today, and every time we would need to wipe the vast amounts of snot off of her face. We literally went through an entire box of tissue paper during the first two days of this trip.
Reached the end of the bus route, dropped us off at Waterfront Park.
Here’s the pineapple fountain.
Does not want to nap…This is not looking good for us.
I think these are crepe myrtle trees that have been trimmed, so they look gnarly. My MIL thinks they are something else though…
Just oozing out into the sidewalk.
So sunny, but the temp is pretty perfect in the mid 70s.
Finally found one of those yellow anti horse carriage signs.
The row of Charleston mansions facing the waterfront.
Miss our old Mini. It was the same color, minus the checkered roof.
This house had the biggest pillar of them all. It wasn’t the biggest house, but it definitely over compensated by having the thickest, longest, and hardest pillars…
At the end of the waterfront is Oyster Point.
Does not care about anything but rocks, leaves, and dirt…and eating rocks, leaves, and dirt.
Now that we’ve reached the end of the tip of the peninsula, it’s time to walk back towards the direction of the hotel and look for lunch. We figured that it’d be fun to walk down one of the narrower streets to see what there is to check out.
Still many nicely manicured houses here, just slightly smaller.
Woah, what is that house back there? It dwarfs all the other houses around here.
There is that massive house again…I was so interested in finding out that I purposely walked around the block to take a better look at it.
This is the big house in question. It was once owned by one of the grandson of John C. Calhoun.
Huger, just like the local beer.
Finally out of the fancy residential neighborhood and close to more businesses where we can find a spot for lunch. More sweet grass baskets for sale.
Let’s see, how much do houses cost here…
Found our lunch location. Now that we are traveling with two kids, one potentially very loud one, our meal criteria always involve whether its “loud kid” friendly.
This seems like a loud kid friendly spot.
They have a good beer selection, perfect.
I think PL eats healthier than all of us.
Grilled cheese for PL. I took a few bites of it, it was delicious…but she didn’t want much of it…
The food here was really delicious, and for a good price too. Charleston isn’t particularly cheap, I would say the food prices here are about the same or higher than Austin.
Then the star child had a blowout…every parents’ nightmare. Good thing we caught it early and it wasn’t able to contaminate much…if you don’t count her pants, her shirt, and RL’s pants…
We are seasoned parents, whole outfit change later, time to keep eating…then of course, PL wanted to be just like her sister and pooped as well. I guess overall good timing. If the girls are going to poop and blowout, doing it while we are in a restaurant with a changing table is the best.
OK, done with lunch and pooping, now time to head back to hotel. P needs a nap and she didn’t take one in her stroller, so we’ll try to go back to hotel and see if she’ll nap in her crib.
No nap makes for a fussy child.
Here you can see how this car is heavily coated in a layer of yellow pollen. Though, PL’s allergy has improved some from yesterday, she’s not sneezing as crazily today.
Poopooed, now time to suck on hand and nap.
Spanish moss! It’s actually not that common to see Spanish moss here.
Gotta stock up at Walgreens while BH and DH head back to the hotel first with the girls.
Nap time for everyone….maybe…if the girls fall asleep…Zzzzzz
Well, lucky us, PL actually napped. Now both girls are awake and watching a little video together on the phone. Haha, its funny how CL is interested in little nursery videos as well.
In our hotel kitchen, they had two electrical outlets right next to the sink. What possible reason do they have to place these outlets so close to the water source?!?!
Tonight is date night for RL and I. With two young kids, the logistics are a little challenging. In order to get out by ourselves, we first need to dress the kids for bed and put them to bed, CL in our bedroom and PL in the living room. After that, it was lights out with DH sitting in the dark in the living room at a corner where PL couldn’t see her. At that point, DH could watch a movie on her phone with headphones while listening to the two girls resist bedtime and fuss themselves into slumber…Traveling with two young kids is very tough and challenging. I can see why most people would rather step in dog poop than travel with two young children.
The Darling, we walked by it a few times during this trip already. This will be our dinner spot. Freedom!!! We are out in Charleston without the kids!!!!
Very nice, not too crowded tonight.
My oyster shooter. You see the oyster floating in there?
We were having a good time, getting drunk and eating oysters when all of a sudden RL let out a small shriek, and pointed at something in her oyster with a disgusted face…wait, wait, what happened.
You can see the offending object at the left side of this oyster. It’s orange and white…I immediately took a look at it and said that it was a crab. RL didn’t believe me and asked the server to come take a look at it, and it was confirmed as a crab. They said that it was rare to get a crab in a oyster and it’s perfectly ok to eat, and some may also consider it a good luck to get a crab in your oyster. RL is already too spooked to eat anymore oysters after seeing a slow moving crab in her oysters…she was done with raw oysters for the night.
I had taken out the offending creature out so now you can see it in full form. I did some research, it’s an oyster crab that lives inside oysters and feeds on the food that the oyster feeds on.
Eating the oyster with the crab…well, I ate the oyster, but not the crab.
RL had some brandied cherries in her drink, and she found them so delicious that she asked our server to bring out the jar so we can take a photo of it to buy. Here’s the brand, except, it doesn’t seem like there’s an easy way for me to buy it…
My clam chowder, this was the only dish that I thought was just ok. It just wasn’t quite in the style I was used to.
One of the best lobster/king crab roll I’ve had anywhere(RL seconded thisĀ as well). YUM YUM!!!
Look at that deliciousness!! Super delicious meal, ahhh, great date night.
Now time to walk back to our hotel buzzed into a room of sleeping babies…must be very very quiet…
