Hawaii Day 3 Part 1

Continued from Hawaii Day 2.

Our last full day of this trip. The plan is to have another lazy early morning then we’ll get in the car to do some tourist stuff.

Love how the grounds are maintained here. The landscaping maintenance must be constant work, especially here next to the ocean with the constant salt spray and wind.

RL takes a look at the tide pools. It’s interesting how some lava rocks are black and some are more pinkish light brown colored.

Do no suggest climbing on lava coastline with sandals. It’s sharp and jagged causing any fall to have a high chance of injury.

There’s a certain beauty in the barren lava coast and the tropical landscape right next to each other.

Little KL found his little ipad nook. Living his best life.

Alright, it’s almost 10am time to hit the road.

They are doing construction in the neighborhood that this airbnb is in. We ended up taking a long detour.

Finally, back on the main road. It’s just this straight main road that goes on and on and on. If any emergency happened here, everyone would be clogging this one road.

Still on the road.

One of those yellow Hawaii fire trucks. One of the kids told me about that first actually.

Get some snacks/brunch at the gas station. I love how the convenience stores here are partly like the ones in Japan.

Mauna Kea, the tallest mountain/volcano on the big island. You can just barely make out the shiny observatories up on top.

Driving towards Hilo.

Hilo is just up ahead.

Crazy how you can see the observatories so clearly.

Past Hilo, headed to the forests past it.

Japanese graveyard. So many Japanese who live in Hawaii.

Then we turn into a smaller road.

This reminds me much of Costa Rica.

Reached our destination, a botanical garden.

It was quite popular, and the parking lots were already filling up. We got really lucky and snagged a primo spot right by the ticket office. Might as well sit in the van with the sliding doors open and eat a light pre-lunch.

Abbey Road, L family style.

RL is in heaven.

Very pretty. The theme of the garden also changes from one area to the next.

Did not know they had Monarch butterflies in Hawaii. I guess they don’t fly off the island?

What a silly girl.

Gold Dust Day Gecko, the same ones that we saw inside our airbnb. Apparently not native, but now thriving well here.

Flowers are crazy and wonderful.

I like this.

Bamboo.

Moss!

First time seeing a Pineapple in Hawaii. I believe they grow a lot of pineapples here.

Guava tree.

Pretty awesome botanical garden. It’s also a good manageable size for the kids and the grandparents.

Moss!!!
